Fun with Apples

Last Saturday the ladies of the family (Cousin, Mom, Grama & Aunt) + my cousin’s boyfriend decided to go on an apple picking adventure!

We went out to Anderson Apple Ranch in Emmett, Idaho to pick apples.

I think my favorite part about this apple ranch is that it’s actually someone’s back yard. She kindly opens it up to the public to pick and lets you buy as many apples as you want.

These are quite honestly the most delicious apples I have ever tasted! We were encouraged to snack on “samples” as we picked.

There was also a great selection of red & yellow apples. The yellow apples were so sweet and delicious!

And some apples were “snack” size! Loved that!

Then it was time to climb the ladder to get the really good ones!

Once we decided we had enough apples we went into the lady’s garage and she weighed them.

My bag o’ apples clocked in at a whopping 12 lbs. And at $.50 a pound, I gladly handed over my $6.00!

Now after purchasing 12 pounds of apples, I was left a little unsure of what I was going to do with all these babies. Then I had visions of cranberries and ginger in my head and immediately googled an applesauce recipe that included the two.

Cranberry Ginger Applesauce:

My applesauce is basically this recipe plus a dash of cinnamon.

Omigawsh, you guys…. this was so TASTY!! I’m not even sure I would have considered myself an “applesauce” person until I made this.

It’s sweet & tangy and smells sooooooooooo good!

What I liked about this recipe is that it was super easy to make. Except for the skinning the apples by hand part, it was super simple.

Now, I still have 6 pounds of apples left! Any ideas on what else I can make with them??

Thanks again for all the encouraging words on my “tissue issue” yesterday. Crossing my fingers that all will be as good as new.

  1. How about apple pie or apple scones that could be brought to a certai unnamed person. Your apple adventure looks so fun and I LOVE apple sauce. Glad to see that other than your tissue issue, all is well with you. I miss you!

  2. So fun! We went apple picking a few weeks ago and I made applesauce too! I’ll have to try this recipe next time – ginger and cranberry sound interesting!!!

  3. I’ve never been a fan of apple sauce but then again I’ve only ever tried the snack-sized stuff. Once. Cold. I think I might have to try to make some, it seems to me as though it would be amazing warm.

As for your other 6lbs I would say make some muffins? An apple crumble? Some pie? You know what my grandma used to make all the time and it was AMAZING? She would peel and core an apple and then wrap it in pie dough with the essential spices and then she would bake everything. I have no idea what that’s called in English but she would call them chaussons aux pommes and with some vanilla ice cream they were amazing.

Also, you and your mom could so be sisters!

  4. YUM! Fresh apples off the tree are great. Our neighbors have probably 8 acres of apple orchard. We have a few trees ourselves. I made a bunch of apple chips in the dehydrator. Need to make some more.

  5. Oh and I’ve done a sort of baked apple dessert before. I just guess the measurements with a shake of this and a scoop of that, but I can tell you what is in it:

Apples chopped into good 1″ chunks, sprinkle with cornstarch. Mix with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg & cloves. Add in chopped walnuts (maybe cranberries too???? hmm, will have to try that). Add this to a casserole dish.

For a topping, take oatmeal, a little brown sugar and a bit of butter and chop it up until it’s all coarse chunks. Spread evently over the apples.

Bake in the oven at about 350° for say 45 minutes – or until the apples are tender. The topping won’t get really crunchy, but it’s a nice texture.

Sorry, it’s not an exact recipe. It’s kind of a healthier apple crumble – less butter & sugar.

  6. Oh, and one more just because everything is better in threes (and I am apparently click happy)…..

You & your Mom sure look alike. I thought that was you in the pics.

  7. I just stumbled on your blog, and will definitely check back frequently. The apple picking looks like so much fun! Now I want applesauce. Or apple crisp. or apple pie! Great pictures.

  8. That looks like a fun day. I know it’s possible to pick your own apples or cherries here in Holland too but I have never done it.

Ideas? Bake the apples in some butter with a bit of cinnamon and serve it with some maple sirup for dessert.

Apple pie. A crumble of apples (you can add some pears). Muffins with apple (you can freeze those), dry them in the oven so you can use them at your breakfast or something.

  9. When I was a kid, we had an apple tree in our backyard. We had apples galore every Sept-Nov. My dad used to give apples to trick-or-treaters when we ran out of candy (they *hated* that). You’d think I’d be sick of them, but I still love apples to this day! Hope you come up with some fun recipes!
